LAURA NYRO – ELI & THE 13TH CONFESSION (1LP) – MOVLP248
The style of the New York-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro was a mixture of New York pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, show tunes, rock and soul.
This is her 2nd album containing themes of passion, love, romance, death, and drugs.
Nyro also performed songs of this album at the legendary 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.

ELVIS PRESLEY – THAT'S THE WAY IT IS (1LP) – MOVLP366
Presley's 40th album, originally released in November 1970, consists of seven tracks recorded in the studio in Nashville during several marathon sessions in June 1970 plus five tracks from his August 1970 show at The International Hotel in Las Vegas.

SPIN – SPIN (1LP) – MOVLP347
After the Dutch band Ekseption fell apart in 1976 some of its members started a new band called Spin.
They recorded and released their eponymous debut album in the same year.
Music on Vinyl offers this completely remastered Dutch Jazz-funk cult-record on 180 grams audiophile vinyl.
Now, you'll be able to spin this on HQ vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1976.

VARIOUS ARTISTS – AIN'T I'M A DOG (2LP) – MOVLP298
Rockabilly; A mutant version of country music (then often referred to as 'hillbilly'), raw and laced with the electricity of the blues and the romp of boogie-woogie.
It was the sound that gave birth to Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins's careers to name a few torchbearers of the genre.

'Ain't I'm a Dog': another carefully-compiled collection of 25 rockabilly rave-ups from the 50's and early 60's.

SUZANNE VEGA – CLOSE UP VOLUME 3, STATES OF BEING (1LP) – MOVLP375
This third installment is a collection of her most haunting songs.
Vega used to call them her 'Mental Health' songs, as she explains: "they are descriptions of a place deep inside.
Anyone can feel like the narrator in 'Penitent', or 'Cracking', depending on your mood."

LEONARD COHEN – SONGS FROM A ROOM (1LP) – MOVLP325
Songs From A Room's naked honesty and fearless emotional intimacy is emphasized by the restrained, almost Spartan production of Bob Johnston, and again shows that Cohen was a major creative force in contemporary songwriting.

JOHN MAYER – ROOM FOR SQUARES (1LP) – MOVLP364
After earlier re-releases of the John Mayer albums 'Heavier Things' (MOVLP206) and 'Continuum' (MOVLP095) now it's time for Mayer's 2001 debut 'Room for Squares', which was produced by John Alagía (Dave Matthews Band) to receive the Music on Vinyl treatment.
Mayer earned a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the single 'Your Body is a Wonderland'.

DEEP PURPLE – PURPENDICULAR (2LP) – MOVLP361
The legendary band's 15th studio album (never released on vinyl before) was the most experimental Deep Purple album to date. There was more focus on the guitar, they used pinch harmonies and they sounded like they were having fun again. The excellent riffs and awe-inspiring solos appear on two 180 grams audiophile vinyl LPs, alongside the exclusive – and elusive – bonus track 'Don't Hold Your Breath'.

FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM – ELIZIUM (1LP) – MOVLP319
The English gothic rock band Fields of the Nephilim formed in 1984.
'Elizium', their third studio album, was originally released in 1990.
The album is considered to be one of their best, showcasing their ability to write textured, loud pieces of goth/rock but at the same time with the ability to create their own sound.

Music On Vinyl Presents Exclusive Release by Rory Gallagher

We are proud to bring you lost, but never forgotten, material by the legendary Rory Gallagher.

In November 1977, after completing a 6 month world tour, Rory Gallagher and his band flew straight from their last show in Japan to San Francisco to begin working on a new album.
The sessions grew tense however, as Gallagher wasn't happy with the mixing process, describing them as 'too complicated', and by the end of January 1978 he shelved the whole record and broke up his band of the past 5 years.
Rory said in 1992 he hoped the album would surface one day but only if it were remixed.
This has recently been done by Daniel Gallagher, Rory's nephew.
Apart from the studio album, this release comes with another fabulous discovery, a blistering live album taken from four nights at The Old Waldorf, San Francisco December 1979.
On stage Rory Gallagher (guitar/vocals), Gerry McAvoy (bass) and Ted McKenna (drums).
And to top it off, the first 1000 copies of this Holy Grail for Rory Gallagher fans include a 36-page booklet and a download coupon that gives access to "The Osaka Jam Sessions" as well as some extra studio tracks from the 'Notes' sessions !

Known as the singer from Velvet Underground, Nico recorded 'Camera Obscura' in 1985 and unfortunately it turned out to be her last album before her death in 1988.

The IPCRESS File from 1965 is one of the classiest spy movies you could wish to see.

Essentially, the group combined the dark romanticism of Leonard Cohen, Ian Curtis, and Scott Walker with the songcraft of Lee Hazlewood and the aesthetics of indie rock.

Having played together as session musicians on several albums, David Paich and Jeff Porcaro decided to form a band with the help of Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro a.o. Rory stated in 1992 he hoped this album he had worked on in the late 70's would surface one day but only if it were remixed properly. Recently remixed and tweaked by Rory's nephew, Daniel Gallagher, this 3LP set combines the studio album with a previously unreleased live concert from the same era. Jimi Hendrix - Winterland
The 1987 release has been expanded from two to eight LPs, featuring previously ureleased music from each of the six unforgettable San Francisco Winterland performances and a 19-minute backstage interview held a month after the legendary shows.
Included in the box is a 24 page booklet with previously unpublished photos from the Winterland and liner notes by David Fricke, senior editor at Rolling Stone.

Jimi Hendrix - In The West

In The West was the first live album to be released after Jimi's untimely death.
Forty years later, Music On Vinyl is re-releasing it with a number of beautiful extra's: three bonus tracks that have never been released before, along with a booklet of unpublished photographs by Jim Marshall, who was also responsible for the iconic cover artwork.

Miles Davis remembrance

September 28th marks the 20th memorial of the passing of legendary musician, trumpeter, composer and style icon Miles Davis. Two decades have passed since his demise, yet he's an ever-present force in music today, influencing and inspiring generations of artists.
Music On Vinyl is proud to have an artist of this calibre in its roster and we will expand our Miles Davis catalogue with a very special release soon:

Miles Davis - Bootleg Series 1: Live In Europe (5LP-boxset)

This release contains nearly 200 minutes of live-music on 5 LP's recorded during concerts of the (second) Miles Davis Quintet in Antwerp, Copenhagen and Paris during the European tour of '67.
The five 180-grams audiophile vinyl records come in a a (lift-off-top) box that includes a 16-page booklet with pictures taken on the ´67 tour.

Harry Muskee, founder and lead singer, sadly passed away in September 2011. 'Groeten Uit Grollo' is still seen as the seminal album by Cuby & The Blizzards, as The Blizzards are seen as one of the most influential Blues bands in Holland. Muskee has sent us his last greetings, saying in one of his final songs: 'Time is running out, getting older every day. The only thing that's left for us is hit the road and play.'

Captain Beefheart – Safe As Milk

Don Van Vliet 's debut album, originally released in 1967 features a 20-year old Ry Cooder on guitar. Cooder's role in the recording process was also "to translate the Captain's wilder notions to the rest of the band and generally act as musical director".
This double LP edition contains 7 bonus tracks.

Bob Dylan - Hard Rain

This live album was recorded during the Rolling Thunder Revue Tour in 1976 and was a follow-up of the 1974 'Before The Flood'-album.
Oddly enough, the album is named after one of his most famous songs, 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' but that song happens to be missing from the album.
The fact that it poured rain for most of the concert may be the reason for the title.

'The Movie Song Album´ is a 1966 studio album that consists of songs from films, opening with the theme from The Oscar. Bennett described the album in his autobiography as his "all time favorite record". Among the arranger and conductors were none other than Neal Hefti and Quincy Jones.

Culled from original television and radio sources this 5 LP box set spans three northern European festival performances. The shows consist entirely of previously unreleased material.

An album that will definitely fascinate Sandy devotees and interest Folk-aficionados. MARIANNE FAITHFULL – DANGEROUS ACQUAINTANCES (1LP) – MOVLP447
There are few people who can say they were discovered by The Rolling Stones, had a relationship with Mick Jagger and had several songs either inspired by or written about her: "You Can't Always Get What You Want" & "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones and "Carrie Anne" by The Hollies amongst them. Her own album 'Dangerous Acquaintances' is now being reissued for the first time since 1981. The album, whose title refers to the French novel 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' contains the song "For Beauty's Sake", which she co-wrote with Steve Winwood.

INXS – LISTEN LIKE THIEVES (1LP) – MOVLP450
'Listen Like Thieves' is generally considered as INXS' breakthrough album.
It includes three of their greatest songs: "What You Need", "Listen Like Thieves", and "Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down The Mountain)". INXS completes its transition into an excellent Rock & Roll singles band with this album. This record comes with a nice lyric sheet.

MILLENNIUM – BEGIN (1LP) – MOVLP439
The Millennium's 'Begin' can truly be described as a bona fide lost classic.
At the time this was the most expensive Rock album that Columbia Records had ever financed, 'Begin' proved to be too melodic for the emerging underground FM radio format and too avant-garde for AM Top 40. Although it didn't find a large audience at the time of its release, 'Begin' is an absolute necessity (or a wonderful rediscovery) for any fan of late-'60s psychedelia!

HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUE NOTES – WAKE UP EVERYBODY (1LP) – MOVLP411
'Wake Up Everybody' from 1975 is filled with profound, uplifting & thought-provoking songs that are as valid today as much as they were in the 70's. Some of these songs are better known for their cover versions than their original ones, so it´s only appropriate to put out the real deal on Music On Vinyl. 'New Skin For The Old Ceremony', Cohen's 4th studio album from 1974, is a distinct move towards richer arrangements and greater musicality, yet through simple song structures the attention is still drawn to the poetry of the lyrics. This first vinyl re-issue since its original release includes "Who By Fire", a duet with Janis Ian, and a song about Cohen's relationship with Janis Joplin, "Chelsea Hotel #2". A lyrics sheet is added for those who truly want to enjoy Cohen's poetry.

THE JAM – THE GIFT

LISA GERRARD – WHALERIDER [ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK]

Lisa Gerrard became famous as one of the core members and vocalists of the ethereal genre-defying Australian group Dead Can Dance. She earned her stripes as a composer as well, when she was nominated, together with Hans Zimmer, for a Golden Globe for the soundtrack of the blockbuster 'Gladiator'. Eventually she really made the grade when she composed the soundtrack to the 2002 Oscar winning film 'Whalerider'.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK – ROUND MIDNIGHT

And on every song a free-flowing Scott reveals her prowess as a spoken-word poet as well as a more than proficient vocalist. Music On Vinyl is proud to present Jill Scott's first album on vinyl, including the remix of "Love Rain" feat. Mos Def!

Bem, ainda não me estreei com a MOV, talvez porque me parece que é algo dúbio que sejam utilizadas master analógicas (no caso em que existem). Para mim não faz muito sentido comprar vinil a partir de masters digitais (embora não seja o fim do mundo) e prefiro nesse caso comprar em digital (alta resolução) ou procurar em vinil edições originais. Foi o que aconteceu por exemplo com algum vinil que tenho dos Rolling Stones, edição da abkco de 20003 proveniente de masters em DSD, essencialmente porque as edições em SACD e os originais estão a preços demasiados elevados.

Por norma a MOV não revela os aspectos técnicos das suas edições ( melhor fonte possível !!!? e técnicos com + de 35 anos de experiência!!!??) e isso para mim é o suficiente para duvidar das fontes utilizadas.

É verdade que eles não se intitulam como editora audiófila, mas é curioso que tudo isto me parece a repetição da história da Back to black, ou estarei redondamente enganado?

O ideal é comprar de editoras audiófilas, o preço é que realmente não ajuda nada.

Das poucas coisas que sei é que a MOV tem acesso aos masters originais. O que fazem com eles e se os usam bem ou mal não sei. O que sei é que as suas reedições são na sua grande maioria de muito boa qualidade em vinil bem negro e brilhante e sem ondulações e tudo isto a um preço bastante justo.

Vamos lá ver uma coisa,
a AAP consegue arranjar os discos da MOV aqui para a malta a preços realmente imbatíveis e baratíssimos, isso é bom e é um facto!!!

Além de serem muito baratos, pelo que diz o António as capas e o vinil têm bom aspecto, e segundo ele diz o som também não é nada mau, se o António diz que o som não é nada mau eu acredito, mas de facto eu ainda nunca ouvi nenhum MOV.

Mas sinceramente também me custa a acreditar que eles usem as masters analógicas por vários motivos,
primeiro pela velocidade e quantidade de lançamentos diferentes que eles fazem de rajada e em catadupa...

Depois, outra coisa que me faz desconfiar da MOV é o facto de ser Holandesa, e os 35 anos de experiência do engenheiro de Mastering que eles dizem que têm remete-nos para as edições que eram feitas na holanda nos anos oitenta, que eram na maioria digitais e na maior parte das vezes de fraca qualidade (com algumas excepções claro).

Mas como o António também já me mostrou uma edição Italiana que é das melhores edições que já ouvi a qualquer preço, simplesmente fabulosa, quando todos sabemos que a maior parte das edições Italianas não prestavam para nada...por isso também já não digo nada...só ouvindo...

Claro que se quisermos abrir os cordões à bolsa existem editoras que nos dão mais garantias de usarem as masters analógicas, mas são muito mais caras e podem não ter os discos que queremos.

E para alguns Albums que apesar de gostarmos não são os nossos albums favoritos, se calhar essas editoras muito mais baratas com um som razoável são uma boa opção para discos que não gostamos assim tanto ao ponto de pagar várias dezenas de euros pelo disco...

Temos é de distinguir o trigo do joio, mas nunca esquecer o factor preço e criticar as editoras de acordo com o preço que cobram. Das edições mais baratas eu gosto da Rhino, SONY Legacy e WEA por exemplo.

Eu gostava de comparar os discos que tenho da SONY LEGACY feitos nos U.S.A. com os correspondentes que a MOV também editou na Europa supostamente a partir das mesmas masters, se alguém tiver as edições correspondentes da MOV poderiamos comparar, eu tenho estes :
- MILES DAVIS KIND OF BLUE SONY/LEGACY 180g LP R.T.I. U.S.A.
- JIMI HENDRIX AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE SONY/LEGACY 180g LP U.S.A.
- JIMI HENDRIX HENDRIX IN THE WEST SONY/LEGACY 200g 2LP Q.R.P. U.S.A.

Estas edições da SONY LEGACY Americanas são importadas dos States com os respectivos custos de portes e alfândega, portanto ficam no mínimo meia duzia de Euros mais caras que as da MOV ou mais...portanto, eu próprio também tenho interesse em comparar com as respectivas da MOV, para ver se as Americanas justificam os custos de importação ou não.

Um abraço

Ainda acerca da Mov e já agora do Hendrix. Na altura que a Sony Legacy editou Hendrix também havia disponível as edições da MOV e claro hesitei, o que devia comprar?

Da informação que na altura recolhi (online), fiquei com a ideia que muita gente duvidava das fontes utilizadas pela MOV e que seria mais seguro adquirir os Sony Legacy. Por sorte, a HMV britânica colocou à venda esses albuns abaixo das 10 libras (legacy) e não hesitei, comprei e esperei que não houvesse surpresas.

Os que adquiri (Electric Ladyland, Are you experienced e Axis:Bold as love), tinham o sticker "all analogue remaster from the original 2 track master tapes", no dead wax não consta nenhuma assinatura, mas tem estampado "sterling" além dos nºs de matriz.

O som é óptimo (para os meus ouvidos e sistema) a prensagem é boa e o vinil silencioso, as capas são em cartão grosso, acabamento fosco.

Enfim, pelo menos para estes comprei o que queria, se são iguais , melhores ou piores que os da MOV não sei, só comparando. Acredito que não há nada de errado com a MOV e que a qualidade será boa, mas tenho um defeito, gosto de saber o que compro.

Como sou novo só agora me apercebi do vosso (nosso) sistema de compras em grupo e respectivos descontos. Excelentes preços.

JOHN MARTYN – HEAVEN AND EARTH

John Martyn, the legendary singer-songwriter, arranger and guitarist recorded twenty studio albums during his career. 'Heaven And Earth' is the last album Martyn was working on before his death in 2009, and was completed by Gary Pollitt & Jim Tullio. Featuring Phil Collins on "Can't Turn Back The Years", this is the first vinyl edition of this phenomenal album.

ALAN PARSONS PROJECT – EYE IN THE SKY

The Project was active between 1975 and 1990 and consisted of Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons surrounded by a varying number of session musicians. KRISTIN HERSH – HIPS AND MAKERS

Kristin Hersh, famous for her work with Throwing Muses, gives us an intimate look at her articulate song craft with her mostly acoustic and sparingly arranged debut album, which was produced by Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group and Suzanne Vega) and includes the famous duet "Your Ghost" with R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe.

Now it's time for another five of Gallagher's albums to get fully remastered and pressed on audiophile 180-grams vinyl. Rory Gallagher released his eponymous solo debut album in 1971. This album marked the departure from Taste, the first band which Gallagher founded, and the start of his solo career. Gallagher wrote all the songs himself and recorded the album with two befriended Belfast musicians.

'Deuce' is Gallagher's second solo album and was originally released in 1971 as well. In contrast with his previous well-produced album, 'Deuce' was an effort by to capture the energy of a live performance. In order to do so Gallagher would often record immediately before or after live performances while keeping production at a minimum.

'Irish Tour '74': a double live album compiled of recordings made during his tour through Ireland, that included troubled Belfast. Despite being a Rock 'n' Roll no-go area during that time, Gallagher always included the city on his roster, and it payed off. Belfast would give him one of his best-ever gigs, recorded for posterity on this album, and in the eponymous rockumentary.

'From Dusk Till Dawn: Music from the Motion Picture' is the soundtrack album for the 1996 action-comedy-horror film, directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by the legendary Quentin Tarantino. The soundtrack has a lot of Texas Blues, featuring artists such as ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother Jimmie Vaughan.
This record – previously unavailable on vinyl – comes in a gatefold sleeve, contains a 6-panel insert and extracts of dialogues from the film and includes a secret bonus track.



WILLIE DIXON – I AM THE BLUES

His songs were popularized by groups such as The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Cream, and Led Zeppelin.
On this 1970 LP, the quintessential Blues songwriter performs his own tunes – each one a classic: "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", "I Can't Quit You, Baby", "The Little Red Rooster", "Spoonful" and of course "Back Door Man" to name a few! Long overdue, the album was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1986, whereas Willie Dixon was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
All the audio on this album has been re-mastered.

LEONARD COHEN – DEATH OF A LADIES MAN

The day Leonard Cohen and Phil Spector decided to make an album together marked the beginning of one of the most controversial partnerships in either man's career. For Cohen it represents the peak of his first decade as a recording artist, both lyrically and stylistically stepping into wholly untapped musical directions. 'Death Of A Ladies' Man' might even be his masterpiece...

TEN YEARS AFTER – STONEDHENGE

On August 17, 1969, Ten Years After broke through to American audiences thanks to a wildly successful performance at Woodstock. Their rendition of "I'm Going Home" was featured both in the film and on the soundtrack album and it catapulted them to stardom. Earlier that year they had released their 3rd LP, 'Stonedhenge'. It shows Ten Years After was already expanding their basic boogie-rock template. Producer Mike Vernon helped steer the band into a more jazz- and blues-oriented direction.
This re-release (the first vinyl re-issue since 1969!) comes in a gatefold sleeve.

SOCIAL DISTORTION – SOCIAL DISTORTION

Social Distortion's third eponymous album from 1990 would turn out to be their best-known work, spawning the most hits, with singles "Ball And Chain", "Story Of My Life" and the Johnny Cash cover "Ring Of Fire". It mixed Punk with Rockabilly, Blues & Country, and split the difference between Rockabilly and Ramones-style Punk. The album includes an insert with lyrics.

THE STYLE COUNCIL – CAFÉ BLEU

The Style Council was formed in 1983 by the ex-The Jam singer and guitarist Paul Weller with keyboardist Mick Talbot. The permanent line-up grew to include drummer Steve White and Weller's then-wife, vocalist Dee C. Lee. 'Café Bleu' is their official debut album released in March 1984, reaching number 2 in the UK charts.
This album also includes a large number of extra musicians, known as Honorary Councillors, including Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt from Everything But The Girl. This first vinyl re-issue since its 1984 release includes an insert.

Shocking Blue from the Beat-scene of the Hague in the 1960s was the first Dutch band to have a #1 hit in the US, "Venus".
After a number of other hits and international tours, the band sadly split in 1975. Their influence on music passed on to new generations; both Nirvana and The Prodigy covered the song "Love Buzz" at some time in their careers. 'Love Buzz', the new vinyl-only compilation released by Music On Vinyl, is a collection of their best hits!
It's issued in a gatefold sleeve on two 10" with a swelteringly sexy poster of singer Mariska Veres. The first batch of 500 copies will be pressed on shockingly blue vinyl!


CRASH TEST DUMMIES – GOD SHUFFLED HIS FEET

Their second album meant their big break in the USA and Europe, thanks to the self-consciously bizarre lyrics and the deep baritone voice of singer/songwriter Brad Roberts, demonstrated in their worldwide top ten hit "MMM MMM MMM MMM".
'God Shuffled His Feet' was the band's most commercially successful album reaching the top of the Album charts in the USA (#9) and the UK (#2).
To celebrate the first ever vinyl release of this album it contains an insert with lyrics.

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD – DUSTY....DEFINITELY

Dusty Springfield was England's greatest pop diva and a remarkable performer. Her influence stretches on to the singers of today. With their towering beehives, panda-black mascara, sultry intimacy and heartbreaking voices, they all owe a huge debt to Dusty. 'Dusty...Definitely', for the first time released in 1968, is considered one of her best albums. Her cover of "Take A Little Piece Of My Heart" and the Motown-styled "Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone" were produced by a young John Paul Jones (who had just gained fame with Led Zeppelin).

GUSGUS – POLYDISTORTION

Experimental Triphop / Electronica / all-round sexy multi-media band Gus Gus from Iceland hardly ever escapes comparison to their more famous counterpart Björk, even if their music stands on its own amongst everything this little island with amazingly talented artists has produced.
The album features Emiliana Torrini on "Why?" and "Is Jesus Your Pal?".
This vinyl version contains 5 bonus tracks (including remixes by Amon Tobin and DJ Vadim), on top of the song "Polyreprise" which could previously only be heard as the hidden track on the cd-version.

SAM COOKE – MR. SOUL

Sam Cooke, inventor and true King of Soul, recorded 'Mr. Soul' in the same year as 'Night Beat' (MOVLP163), and seems to be its more adult counterpart, with soulful ballads taking up most of the album.
With standards such as "Willow Weep For Me", "I Wish You Love", and "For Sentimental Reasons", Cooke shows a quiet emotive side of himself without losing his keen sense of melody.
For the first time in over thirty years, Music On Vinyl is re-issuing 'Mr. Soul' on 180 grams audiophile vinyl with remastered audio.

PORTISHEAD – ROSELAND NYC LIVE

Along with Massive Attack and Tricky, Portishead was part of the Bristol triumvirate that popularized Triphop in the early nineties, especially in America.
But what made them stand out was their added elements of Cool Jazz, Acid House and soundtrack samples creating an atmospheric and seductive sound that appealed to a broad audience.
In 1998, when they realized that fans were swapping bootlegs of their live shows like crazy, Portishead decided to capture a unique performance.
